Couple maps mesmerizing fiber optic star ceiling after their future daughter’s due date

May 2, 2018 Editor 0

This couple deserves an award, and they haven’t even had their child yet. After seeing a thread on Reddit’s r/DIY subreddit with a similar idea, Andy and Lisa decided to make a fiber-optic star ceiling in their daughter’s nursery. Only this one has a precise star map  based on their child’s due date. SEE ALSO: First four images from Virgin Galactic’s successful new test flight It’s as amazing and complex as it sounds. Researchers spot colliding galaxies interacting in the early universe

April 29, 2018 Editor 0

The earliest eons of the universe were turbulent and violent.  Newly found data shows that back then — just 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang set this cosmic experiment in motion — a group of 14 galaxies in the midst of star formation merged and interacted with one another.  SEE ALSO: Astonishingly detailed map of the Milky Way will blow your mind The galaxies found in the new data, which was collected by the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) ALMA […]

Incredible New View of the Milky Way Is the Largest Star Map Ever

April 25, 2018 Editor 0

The European Space Agency’s Gaia spacecraft team has dropped its long-awaited trove of data about 1.7 billion stars. You can see a new visualization of all those stars in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies above, but you really need to zoom in to appreciate just how much stuff there is in the map. Yes, the specks are… Read more… Powered by WPeMatico

Astronomers are out looking for the sun’s long-lost siblings

April 19, 2018 Editor 0

The sun has siblings out there, and astronomers are looking for them. Astronomers have surveyed and collected the “DNA” of more than 340,000 stars in the Milky Way, which will help them understand how galaxies formed and evolved over time. SEE ALSO: Software used to study stars is helping protect the rarest and most endangered animals on Earth Dubbed GALAH, the group of Australian and European researchers have been working on the project since 2013, and on Wednesday they publicly […]

This Is How Stars Would Look Over NYC If It Weren’t So Freaking Light Polluted

April 6, 2018 Editor 0

I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve seen the Little Dipper—the 2003 blackout, a family trip to the Grand Canyon, a camping trip, and a stargazing drive through Wisconsin cut short by the cold. I don’t remember ever seeing the faint band of the Milky Way. Growing up in New York’s suburbs, there just aren’t… Read more… Powered by WPeMatico

Hubble Space Telescope spots the farthest star ever seen thanks to quirk of nature

April 2, 2018 Editor 0

Scientists using the Hubble Space Telescope have spotted the most distant star ever studied thanks to some cosmic luck. The star, named Lensed Star 1 (LS1 for short), was born about 9 billion years ago and is thought to be a huge, blue star with a surface temperature ranging from 11,000 degrees Celsius to 14,000 degrees Celsius. This makes the star more than twice as hot as our sun, NASA said in a statement. Under normal circumstances we wouldn’t be […]

A Visiting Star Jostled Our Solar System 70,000 Years Ago

March 21, 2018 Editor 0

Around the same time our ancestors left Africa, a dim red dwarf star came to within 0.8 light-years of our Sun, marking the closest known flyby of a star to our Solar System. New research suggests Scholz’s Star, as it’s known, left traces of this interstellar encounter by perturbing some comets in the outer Oort Cloud. Read more… Powered by WPeMatico

That interstellar asteroid probably came from a solar system with two suns

March 20, 2018 Editor 0

Remember the interstellar asteroid that zipped through our solar system last year? It likely came from a very alien place.  According to a new study, the asteroid, named ‘Oumuamua, probably came from a solar system with two stars. SEE ALSO: An interstellar asteroid has been studied for the 1st time… and it looks really odd (Perhaps the best analog for this kind of binary system is actually in fiction. In Star Wars, Luke Skywalker’s home planet of Tatooine orbits two […]
